The New RG40XXV by Anbernic is Amazing - it's a Classic Games Machine in Your Pocket

Today we’re going to be taking a look at a brand new retro handheld console known as The New RG40XXV. some of you may have been a bit concerned because it’s been about 2 weeks since Amber Nick released a handheld but here it is the RG40XXV.

if you’ve been in the market for a DMG style handheld with a larger screen than their older RG35XX then this is one you need to take a look at. we’ve got an analog stick little bit of RGB they’ve been kind of adding that to everything recently.

Key Features of the RG40XXV

The new RG40XXV has a 4-inch IPS display that’s fully laminated so we’ve got some really good viewing angles and one of my favorite things here is the d-pad. I would love to see this in upcoming handhelds and of course, we will see more handhelds be released down the road. round back we’ve got our shoulder buttons and triggers these are nonlinear and you know we’re going to be playing a lot of retro games on this so it really doesn’t need linear Triggers on this unit

Design and Comparison with RG35XX

One thing you might notice here is there’s no battery compartment. So to get to that battery you will have to remove these six screws on the rear of the unit. I wanted to give you a little size comparison between the RG35xx which was their last DMG style handheld and as you can see the New RG40XXV definitely dwarfs it. the older one had a 3.5-inch IPS really great for just throwing right in your pocket but you know if you’re looking for something a bit bigger and love this style then I would definitely take a look at this newer version.

I/O and Connectivity

when it comes to I/O over here on the left-hand side New RG40XXV got volume rocker and a micro SD card slot. moving over to the right-hand side power button we’ve also got a reset button and one more micro SD. on the bottom USB type-c for charging the unit up or you could use it as OTG. We also have a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a mini HDMI output. so you can easily connect this to a larger screen

Pricing and Color Variants

Right now the price of the New RG40XXV is $67. The new RG40XXV offers three different color variants they’ve got the White Version which is the one we’re taking a look at transparent black and indigo blue. keep in mind with that base price there you will be getting a 64 GB micro SD card along with it. You can upgrade to 128 256 it’s really up to you.

Performance and Gaming Capabilities

when it comes to the overall feel personally I do like it but I am a big fan of these DMG style or vertical handhelds. If you don’t like the DMG-style handhelds then you’re probably not going to like this one.

we can reach all of these buttons quite easily. it’s very lightweight so holding it just with your thumbs at the very end to reach that analog stick is super easy. The D-pad here is topnotch and we will be getting into some testing around back we’ve got the clicky triggers and shoulder buttons. but everything else on this unit minus the analog stick itself is using conductive pads behind it.

Take a look at the overall specs here. we’ve seen this before actually time and time again with their RG XX devices. The new RG40XXV gets the H700 and it’s a quad-core 853 1.5 GHz, Mali G31 MP2 GPU,64 GB Micro SD included and 1 GB of RAM but with this, we get that 4-inch IPS display with a resolution of 640×480, single front-facing speaker and a 3200 mAh battery. They claim up to 6 hours of battery life out of this.

Operating System and RGB Customization

The new RG40XXV going to get the same kind of performance on this that we did with their other RGXX devices powered by that all-winner H700. If you were looking for an upgrade to run higher-end emulators then this one’s not for you. It’s still got that same chip we’ve been seeing in the RG XX devices. operating system here is also basically the same and it is Linux and since we’ve got a little bit of RGB here the main difference between this and let’s say the RG 35xx OS would be our RGB control.

There are several different profiles that we can use here. you can go to Rainbow, you can go to single color, you can change the brightness, you can change the speed but other than that a lot of this stuff stays the same in the operating system, and as for the H700 CPU here through all of my testing basically what we can do up to is around PSP. Even then we’re not going to run every single game without a frame skip. some are still going to struggle but this does offer full-speed emulation for thousands and thousands of different retro games underneath PSP.

A lot of the Dreamcast stuff works pretty well good N64 support here but you’re not going to be doing GameCube Wii and PS2 on a device like this. At least not with the all-winner H700 they’re using in these RGXX devices.
